Swan receives prestigious Dr. Mary Walker award for service to military families
This year, Pioneer Services Representative Pam Swan was honored with the award during a ceremony at Fort Sill, Okla., Dec. 20. A quarterly award whose winners are decided upon by the U.S. Army Forces Command, the Dr. Mary Walker award is one of the most prestigious given to civilians.
"Receiving this award is one of the greatest honors I've ever received," said Swan, who began working at Pioneer Services in 1999. "It just reaffirms my belief that those of us behind the scenes truly do make a difference, and that the work our company does is having a positive impact."
Swan became a military spouse in 1987, and immediately began assisting her husband with studies for his many classes, boards, tests, and other coursework. She has spent nearly 20 years meeting with military spouses, offering guidance on the impact frequent moves, deployments, and other issues have on a family’s finances. Swan has also donated her frequent flyer miles to families in need of emergency travel, volunteered extra time to provide financial education classes and pre-deployment briefings, and devoted herself to assisting military spouses’ find employment or volunteer opportunities.
"When I speak to a young family, I can draw upon my own experience and the experiences I've learned from other military spouses," said Swan. "I'm just honored to be able to help them take control of their finances, learn how to manage their money a little better, and to work for a company that supports military families the way Pioneer Services does."
